Captain Starlight theatrette

The Theatrette is an audio and video presentation providing an historical view into the Courthouse, Berrima and the surrounding region. The video is approximately 18 minutes in length and is a fascinating look into the life and times of the area.

Treachery, treason and murder

Perhaps one of the most famous court cases held at Berrima Courthouse was that of Lucretia Dunkley and Martin Beech. In 1843 they appeared in the courtroom accused of murder. All day and into the candle lit evening the trial continued until adjourned at 10.00pm to re-convene twelve hours later. At 5.30pm on the second day the trial ended. The murdered man was Henry Dunkley, husband of Lucretia. Married for 9 years, the couple were not happy, both drinking to excess and quarrelsome. Several months prior to his death, Henry had engaged the services of Martin Beech. Lucretia Dunkley and Martin Beech were both found guilty of Henry’s murder and sentenced to death. They were hanged at Berrima on Monday, the 16th October 1843. This makes for an interesting audio and lightshow which can be viewed in the courtroom.

The gift shop is full of historical books of the Berrima district and beyond. The staff in the shop are very knowledgeable of the area and it’s history and will help you with anything you wish to know.
